Project Report: Project Work or Two Optional Papers
Students can choose either project work or two optional papers in the fourth semester. The optional papers are Services Marketing and Quality Management.
If you choose project work, you need to prepare a report based on a management problem in a business or industrial organization. The project fee is INR 3,000 and needs to be paid along with the second-year fee.
If you prefer studying two additional subjects, you can choose the optional papers. Choose carefully because the university does not allow students to switch from project work to optional papers, or from optional papers to project work, after choosing the option.
How to Attend Online PCP Classes
The university publishes the schedule for online Personal Contact Programme (PCP) classes on the IDE website. Students need to check the PCP Classes section for their batch to find the class schedule, meeting link and password.
The university does not send a separate SMS to each student for these classes. If you are working, check the schedule in advance so you can plan your time for the sessions.
Examination Centres and Language
Madras University conducts distance MBA examinations at centres within Tamil Nadu. Students can choose an examination centre from the available options. The university may allot another centre depending on the number of students. Your final examination centre will be mentioned on the hall ticket.
Students are allowed to write the examinations in English only.
If you live outside Tamil Nadu, consider the travel and accommodation cost before taking admission. Online admission does not mean that you can write the semester examinations from home.
Internal Assessment and Passing Marks
Each MBA theory paper carries 100 marks. Out of these, 20 marks are for internal assessment and 80 marks are for the semester examination.
Students need to complete the online internal assessment for each semester within the announced deadline. The university conducts this assessment through MCQ-based online tests.
To pass a theory paper, you need at least 40 marks out of 80 in the semester examination and at least 50 marks out of 100 after adding internal assessment marks.
For example, if you score 40 in the semester examination and 8 in internal assessment, your total will be 48. You will not pass that paper because the combined total is below 50.
Eligibility Criteria

The second-year fee is INR 17,600 for both categories. Students who choose project work need to pay an additional INR 3,000 along with the second-year fee.
For example, if you graduated from another university and apply online, the first-year and second-year fees together are INR 38,740. If you choose project work, this amount becomes INR 41,740. Examination and other applicable charges are separate.
The online admission fee shown in the table includes the application cost of INR 590 and entrance test fee of INR 400. The in-person first-year fee includes the entrance test fee. The prospectus lists the application form cost separately as INR 590.

Examination and Other Charges

For example, the first semester has five theory papers. At INR 400 per paper, the theory examination fee for these five papers comes to INR 2,000. This is separate from the first-year fee.

Fee Concessions
The university offers fee concessions for eligible students. As per the 2026–27 prospectus, visually challenged students are exempted from tuition and examination fees.
Candidates with at least 40% physical disability and a National Identity Card for disability issued by the competent authority can get exemption from tuition and special fees for the MBA program.

Admission Procedure
Madras university distance education MBA procedure is simple.
ABC ID and DEB ID
Students need to create their DEB ID before taking admission in a distance learning program. To create a DEB ID, you need an Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) ID.
If you already have an ABC ID, you can use it to register on the UGC-DEB website and generate your DEB ID. Keep both IDs ready before starting the admission process.
There are three ways students can get admission in Madras University distance MBA courses.
Admission Through Single Window Admission Centre
Students seeking admission can visit the single window admission centre located at the IDE building at Chepauk Campus, Chennai.
Students visiting single window admission centre are required to follow below mentioned instructions
- Filled-in admission form need to be submitted at admission counter along with photostat copies of the certificates, filled-in computer coding sheet;
- Photo copies of the certificates will be verified with the originals.
- Eligible students are required to pay Rs.400 entrance examination fee and have to attend the examination.
- Students who passed the examination will be given provisional admission letter.
- After receiving the provisional admission letter, students are required to pay the tuition and other fee at bank counter. After paying the fee students can collect the study material and ID card from the counter.
Admission Through Online
All Indian nationals can take admission online in Madras University distance MBA courses. Students want to take admission through online mode can visit the website www.ideunom.ac.in
It is advised to check your eligibility before applying for the admission.
After online registration, students can pay the fee through online payment gateway available at official website.
After making the successful payment, study material and ID card will be sent by post to student’s given address.
Students applying online need to submit their original certificates for verification within 15 days of online registration. They can send the documents through Registered Post, Speed Post or courier to the Director, Institute of Distance Education, University of Madras, Chepauk, Chennai – 600005.
Students should include a photocopy of the provisional admission intimation and a passport size photograph. They can also visit the Online Admission Section in person with the original certificates and photocopies.
The university sends the study materials and ID card after verifying the original certificates. If you do not submit the documents within the required time, your admission can be cancelled. The prospectus states that the tuition fee will not be refunded in this situation.
Students can also visit the university in person to get the documents verified.
Admission Through Learning Support Centres
